19-year-old Perla Decena Castillo of McAdoo was pronounced dead at the scene of a one-vehicle crash, early Saturday morning in Banks Township, Carbon County.

According to an information release, Decena Castillo was a passenger in a 2011 Honda CRV, driven by 21-year-old Endy Rodriguez Sanchez of Beaver Meadows, who is reported to have been maneuvering a left curve when he started to lose control of the vehicle, and entered the opposing lane of travel. After attempting to counter-steer, control of the vehicle was lost. 

Rotating clockwise, the vehicle entered the westbound lane and onto the shoulder before falling down a small embankment, where it struck several trees. The vehicle came to what was described as “an uncontrolled rest” clockwise on the driver’s side 

According to the release, police report that Decena Castillo was sitting on the lap of Rodriguez Sanchez at the time of the incident, and upon their arrival, she was found trapped underneath the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile, a second passenger who was situated in the passenger’s seat was reported to have minor injuries and was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazelton. 

Police report that Rodriguez Sanchez is suspected of driving under the influence, and that he, too, was transported to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Hazelton, for suspected minor injuries. 

Police were assisted on the scene by various agencies, including McAdoo Fire Company, the Lehigh Valley Health Network-EMS Hazelton, Carbon and Schuylkill Counties Fire Police, the Carbon County Coroner’s Office and Paul’s Towing.
