One man is facing charges after a Monday morning crash that severely damaged a Port Carbon daycare.

Police and emergency personnel responded to the scene at Washington Street, in Port Carbon, where a white 2013 Nissan Pathfinder had crashed into a wall of the Little Sunshines Daycare.

According to an information release, Pennsylvania State Police report that the Pathfinder driven by a 55-year-old Philadelphia man was driving erratically and at unsafe speeds, allegedly forcing other vehicles off the road before the crash.

According to the release, the driver left the roadway at the Intersection of Washington Street and Wood Street at a high rate of speed before crashing through a concrete bollard, causing the vehicle to go airborne. The vehicle then crashed into the kitchen area of the daycare, causing “severe structural damage.”

The daycare was occupied at the time with 22 children and four adult caretakers present in the building. No occupants are reported to have sustained injuries, and were evacuated.

The driver, however, was transported to a nearby area hospital for treatment, where State Police report he consented to a chemical test of blood. He is now facing the following charges:

  • Driving under the influence
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Causing a catastrophe
  • Recklessly endangering another person
  • Additional charges relating to the crash
